Jean-Michel Comte was born in 1975 in Nice, where he lived until the age of 21. The Provençal light of the countryside around Nice has been a constant inspiration for him, as has the violence he experienced as a teenager.
His artistic output has developed in parallel with work in high-end prêt-à-porter. From 2017 to 2020, he moved his atelier into the Taulan Art Factory in Montreux, where a number of artists and craftsmen have studios.
Jean-Michel Comte's work is gestural and instinctive, and is rooted in turbulent inner experiences, emotions and traumatic memories which he transcends and transforms into hidden writings, pulsing outlines and spattered figures.
By moving from one sheet to another, he captures the immediacy of a gesture.
"I cover the sheets, I saturate them, I scratch them, I retouch and rework things all the time. I am expressive and repressive. I uncover things and I cover things up. "
